The Exclusivity of Fashion Shows May be Shifting

As fashion shows continue to evolve and manifest into multiple different forms, the cultural
value we place on those who attend shows will also be forced to shift. Historically, those who
attend fashion shows are regarded as important enough, talented enough, or famous enough to
have a seat at such a prestigious event. Those in attendance are not limited to the fashion
industry: there are often a plethora of singers, actors, and other A-listers who are relevant enough to snag an invite.

Because fashion shows are closed to the public, they exude exclusivity. Getting into a notable fashion show as an average consumer is almost impossible, unless you have connections with designers, are currently interning or working behind the scenes, or have enough money to make a donation or buy a seat. Forbes released an interesting article on how to prepare for a fashion week after making your way into one - and it is important to point out that working your way up in the industry is a necessary step to becoming part of the world of high fashion.
There is an immense amount of effort and self-advocacy necessary for an individual to watch a fashion show, even from nosebleed seats.

In recent years, the doors to fashion weeks have slowly opened to popular YouTubers and
influencers. This trend will likely extend to TikTok stars now that the platform has taken off,
which begs the question of how important fame and notoriety is in the pursuit of an invitation.

This may also help the image of fashion week, which can be extremely daunting for outsiders
and may push individuals away from high fashion rather than creating new spaces for fresh talent to shine.

However, with many fashion shows moving online, the theme of exclusivity may further shift.
The entire atmosphere and mood of the event has changed, allowing individuals to access the
most expensive and cutting edge designs from the comfort of their homes. There are no
paparazzi pictures of Gigi Hadid and Zayn in London or Paris, dripping with confidence before
heading backstage. Moving online means more accessibility, and a larger necessity to open doors to the average citizen in order to keep afloat in an increasingly difficult economy.
